Securing Gun and School Safety

Jonathan Lewis earns distinction of “Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate”

We must take measures to guarantee the safety of all of our citizens, especially our children. Gun and school safety begin with new and stronger solutions to lax gun control laws. I also believe that school safety is a national issue, not just a local issue, and addressing it adequately requires a comprehensive, federal-level plan.

Here’s how I plan to protect American citizens and our schools:

  • We need modern and strict gun control laws, including tough background checks with mental health screening, severe restrictions–if not elimination–of the sale of automatic weapons, stopping sales of military grade weapons technology, and closing all the loopholes that don’t hold gun shows accountable.
  • We need to fight the influence of the National Rifle Association. We cannot continue to let special interest groups like the NRA wield undue power and influence over our ability to protect our citizens.
  • Develop national standards for the definition of a safe school. We must establish a National Commission on School Safety, where leading experts will define national standards of security for urban, suburban, and rural schools and determine how best to uphold these standards. This should include a national school safety training program to give local police and public safety officers national standards of training that are consistent across districts.
  • Include school safety in the National Fusion Center System with an emphasis on information sharing. There are nearly 80 state Fusion Centers established to bring together law enforcement officials and intelligence experts from the national, state, local and tribal communities to promote information sharing to reduce the risks of threats. School safety should be a central issue addressed through their activities.
  • Protect with technology, not moats. We don’t have to turn schools into fortresses. We can make our schools safer with innovative technology, not weapons and armed guards.
